La Crau

La Crau is a municipality with 16,855 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the French department of Var in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur. The place belongs to the arrondissement Toulon and is the capital of the canton of La Crau.

Geography

La Crau lies at the eastern end of a vast plain surrounded by a number of small hamlets that are located in a world characterized by horticultural cultural landscape at the foot of Mont Fenouillet, a spur of the Massif des Maures.

History

The first documentary mention of the place as Carum dates from the year 1376. Pending the separation of Hyères in 1853 La Crau from the nearby town was administered. In the 19th century cork manufacturing and oil mills were the most important economic factor. On 22 August 1944 La Crau was liberated by the Allies of the German occupation. Later it was there until at least mid-1947, the 312th transit camp for German prisoners of war.

Demographics

His position between the industrial city of Toulon and Hyères the resort owes La Crau strong population growth. From the mid-1970s, the population has nearly tripled by the end of the 20th century.

Economy

The main economic activities of the municipality are agriculture and viticulture. In addition to wine flowers, fruits and vegetables are grown. The wineries La Craus belong to the AOC Cotes de Provence.
