Lagos–Mombasa Highway

The Lagos - Mombasa Highway - also Mombasa - Lagos highway - the Trans -African Highway No. 8 and the main road between West and East Africa. It is 6259 km long and connects to the Dakar - Lagos Highway ( TAH 7). If both highways are finished, they will constitute the longest east -west link across the African continent with a total length of 10,269 km.

Route

Is being developed as part of the transcontinental highway network, which by the Economic Commission for Africa ( UNECA ), the African Development Bank ( ADB) and the African Union, the path leads Nigeria, Cameroon, Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and Kenya.

The crossing of the Congo Basin

On the paved road sections in Nigeria, Cameroon, Uganda and Kenya this highway is busy. In the middle section by the Democratic Republic of Congo but it is currently not proving to be a viable route between East and West Africa, as it is there only from muddy roads that are impassable by the frequent, heavy rains. The rainforest and the need for frequent river crossings pose major problems for road builders. There is no simpler alternative routes, and so the East- West trade must be carried on the air or sea, making him naturally very limited.

The highway should lead by Bangassou in the Central African Republic on Bondo after Buta in the Democratic Republic of Congo, but after the civil war in the Congo this route is impassable. The Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo recommends that instead of Zongo lane ( across the river from Bangui ) about Gemena, Lisala and Bumba by Buta to operate, which has already been set in better condition.

In the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the route from Kisangani to the Ugandan border in Katwe via Kamanda and Beni. This dirt road is often impassable. The longer route from Kisangani to the border with Rwanda in Bukavu on the route of the Congolese National Road 3 would be recommendable, since it is partially paved, but since the Civil War, it was south of Walikale no longer busy.

From Bukavu, a paved road to Kigali in Rwanda and establishes the connection to the finished road part in Mbarara in Uganda.

The area of the Great Lakes and the eastern part

The eastern part of the Lagos - Mombasa highway is paved for decades and is the main connecting road between the African Great Lakes and the coast dar.

The road from Bujumbura in Burundi on Kigali to Mbarara can be seen as tributaries of the landlocked countries of Burundi and Rwanda to the Indian Ocean in Mombasa.

After the road in the Democratic Republic of Congo is severely limited, the eastern part of the road, the most important trade route for the center, the east and northeast Congo dar. After the second civil war in the Congo promote charities through this connection also their relief supplies there.

The eastern part of the road is probably also the origin of the expression " Kinshasa Highway" for the spread of the AIDS virus along the trade routes that have been studied on the highways in Uganda and Kenya. Some sources described the Kinshasa Highway as a paved connection between Uganda and Kinshasa, but in the Democratic Republic of Congo, there were never more than bush paths between East and West.

The eastern part of the Lagos - Mombasa highway is the only part of the entire African road network, in which the name Trans - African Highway is commonly used and is also available on some street signs.
