Angebl. Sightings of a monster

The Lake Champlain (, Champlain '), French: Lac Champlain ) is the sixth largest lake in the United States.

Located just south of Montreal between the Green Mountains and the Adirondack Mountains on the border of the U.S. states of Vermont and New York and has low proportion in the north in the Canadian province of Québec. It is named after Samuel de Champlain, who explored it in 1609 and sailed from 4 July of the year. At this time he was regarded as the boundary between the tribes of the Algonquian and the Iroquois in the west to the east, as reflected in the names that had been on the lake the aborigines: Pe - Tonbonque (such as " water, which between them [the tribes ] is " ) at the Algonquin, Caniaderi - Guarunte (about :" See, which is the gateway to the land " ), among the Iroquois.

In about 180 km long and up to 19 km wide Champlain are approximately 80 islands of which forms a private County in the U.S. state of Vermont. He is on the Great Lakes in the Midwest, the Iliamnasee in Alaska and the Lake Okeechobee in Florida, the largest lake in the United States.

History

In the 19th century Champlain was connected by a duct system to the Hudson River. The ports Burlington, Port Henry and Plattsburgh are only of little commercial interest.

The waters became famous through the rumor of a sea monster, which is named after its discoverer Champ already mentioned above. Since 1982, the distant relatives Nessie is protected by law, as it has become a major tourist attraction.
