The total distance walked in 1902 at the Swiss Federal Railways. This led in May 1982 the clock schedule on the route Schaffhausen - a Rorschach.

In 1996 the route was Schaffhausen - Roman horn after a competitive tender from the Mittelthurgaubahn ( MThB ) adopted, which introduced a half- hour, the track and the rolling stock created modernized and additional stops. The section of Roman Horn - Rorschach was not advertised, as SBB needed this route. When the Mittelthurgaubahn went in late 2002 due to financial problems in liquidation, the line remained with the SBB subsidiary Thurbo, which was originally intended as an alliance between SBB and Mittelthurgaubahn.

Route

The 80 km long single-track sea line leads from Schaffhausen along the Rhine and Lake Constance to Rorschach. Striking engineering structures are the Emmersberg tunnel (length 761 m) and the Rhine bridge Feuerthalen (length 262 m) in Schaffhausen.

The short section between the stations Rorschach, and Rorschach is two lanes. The mountain railway from Rorschach to Heiden also drive around the 900 m long section between these two stations. She was previously named Rorschach -Heiden mountain railway ( RHB ) and merged in 2006 with the Appenzell Railways (AB). The trains leave every hour to Heiden.

The two Kreuzlinger stations were renamed because of the incorporation of Emmishofen 1928. The Emmishofen station became the Kreuzlingen railway station and the train station to Kreuzlingen Kreuzlingen Hafen train station.

The stop Taegerwilen God loves was called up to the opening of Mittelthurgaubahn 1911 still Taegerwilen station and was then renamed Taegerwilen SBB. Following the acquisition of the course by the Mittelthurgaubahn the station received its present name.

After the acquisition, the following stations / stops emerged:

The breakpoint Bottighofen was moved closer to the village, to increase passenger numbers.

The intersection Altnau was canceled by the SBB in 1993 and commissioned on 25 September 1998 by the MThB again. It is operated in the left-hand traffic and is technically equipped and protected that a simultaneous entry is allowed from both directions.

Operation

The route will take the S3 (St. Gallen - Roman Horn - Schaffhausen ) St. Gallen alternately operated the train every half hour, the S7 ( Weinfelden - Roman Horn - - Rorschach ) and S8 ( Schaffhausen Rorschach ). It is integrated into the Ostwind.

Originally drove a few passenger trains in the railway triangle from Kreuzlingen via Konstanz to Kreuzlingen Hafen and vice versa, but this is not consistently and over the years since the Mittelthurgaubahn established the connection to Constance. Today, all trains run this section without going through constancy.

On the route frequented a fast pair of Schaffhausen - Rorschach - Buchs SG - Sargans - Churchill, later Schaffhausen - Rorschach with connection to Chur, 1996, the course has been canceled altogether. The operation was performed with the oldest rolling stock of the SBB, it was not rare that passengers morning and evening sitting in unlit trains because the batteries of the car failed, there were cancellations.

By the summer schedule 1994 here were Re 4 /4 and Ae 4/7-geführte trains travel, which were then replaced by the modernized Wendezugkompositionen Railcar 540. This tentative improvement could hardly hide the fact that the SBB infrastructure of the route difficult neglected and even flirted with a move to bus operation.

The government of the canton of Thurgau achieved with the support of the Federal Office of Transport, that the concession to operate the route Schaffhausen - was tendered novel horn. The tender was a pilot project and the first of its kind in Switzerland.

After the takeover by the Mittelthurgaubahn articulated railcars were used by Stadler Rail for passenger traffic. The operation is now run by Thurbo well articulated railcar with the newer generation of Stadler Rail.

Domestic and foreign transport companies carry freight trains on the sea line.
