Landgravine Marie Louise of Hesse-Kassel

Marie Louise of Hesse -Kassel ( born February 7, 1688 in Kassel, † April 9, 1765 in Leeuwarden ) was a princess of Hesse- Kassel and by marriage Princess of Nassau- Dietz and Princess of Orange. Marie Louise, adored by her subjects as " Marijke Meu ", was governor of Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe.

Life

Marie Louise was a daughter of the Landgrave Charles of Hesse -Kassel (1654-1730) from his marriage to Marie Amalia (1653-1711), daughter of Duke Jacob Kettler of Courland. In 1700, the Princess was renamed in honor of the previously desert and now by faith volatile Huguenots from France newly populated place Hammonshausen at Frankenau in Louisendorf.

They married on April 24, 1709 in Kassel Prince John William Friso of Nassau- Dietz, since 1702 and Prince of Orange ( 1687-1711 ).

After the early death of her husband, the Duchess bought a house in Leeuwarden, which they expanded as their Princessehof. Today, the Princessehof houses a ceramics museum, whose foundation is the porcelain collection of the Duchess.

The princess was in Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe 1711-1731 regent for her son, and again after the death of her daughter for her grandson Wilhelm from 1759 until her death. Their reign was marked by their social commitment, which she became very popular as Marijke Meu ( Aunt Marijke ). In dealing with the States-General, she secured from the Orange Heritage dominion IJsselstein.
