László Kovács (politician)

László Kovács [ la ː slo ː kova ː ʧ ] ( born July 3, 1939 in Budapest) is a Hungarian politician, he was several times Foreign Minister of Hungary and later European Commissioner for Taxation and Customs Union.

Kovács is married and has one daughter.

Training

From 1953 to 1957 attended László Kovács Lajos - Petrik High School for Chemistry in Budapest. Kovács then studied from 1963 to 1968 Economics in Budapest.

Besides Hungarian, he also speaks fluent English and Russian.

Career in Hungary

He worked after 1968 in the apparatus of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party. From 1989 to 1990 he was State Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Between April and October 1989, he was a member of the Party Central Committee. He was in 1990 a member of the Committee for Foreign Policy of the Hungarian Parliament, which he chaired from 1993 to 1994. From 1994 to 1998 he was the first foreign minister. In 1998, he was Chairman of the Socialist Party of Hungary. After the defeat in the European elections, he did not run for the post of party chairman ( he was succeeded by István Hiller ). From 2002 to 2004 he was again foreign minister until he joined the European Commission, and was succeeded by Ferenc Somogyi.

Kovács 1990 Member of the Hungarian Parliament and member of the Presidium of the Socialist Party of Hungary.

Career in the European Union

In 2004 he was commissioner-designate for energy in the EU Commission José Manuel Durão Barroso. At his hearing before Parliament, he pointed out some deficiencies, which is why he was later given the responsibility for Taxation and Customs Union. Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs was Latvian.

He was inaugurated on November 18. He then resigned as a Member of Parliament. His term ended on December 31, 2006
