Late Quaternary prehistoric birds

The study of Late Quaternary avifauna is a sub-discipline of Paläornithologie that deals with Vogeltaxa, between the Upper Pleistocene and the year 1500 ( the beginning of the colonization of America and the world by the Europeans ) are extinct. Another aspect of the research field is the dwarf or giant growth of birds, the loss of the ability to fly and the line of descent from prehistoric to recent taxa.

Leaders in this field are or were Trevor H. Worthy, Storrs Lovejoy Olson, Pierce Brodkorb, Jean -Christophe Balouet, David William Steadman, Anthony Cheke and Helen Frances James, whose research in the caves and sediments of Australia, the Mascarene Islands, Hawaii, New Zealand, the Caribbean, St. Helena, Ascension's, Madagascar, the Mediterranean Islands, the Canary Islands, Melanesia and Polynesia promoted invaluable data on the extinct avifauna of these regions to days.

One of the pioneers of Paläornithologie was Richard Owen, who dealt the first with the investigation of Moa bones.

In the period of the late Quaternary (from 40,000 BC to 1500 AD) many bird species have become extinct, which today is known only from skeletal remains from Pleistozänablagerungen or mixed Pleistocene / Holozänablagerungen and their age is very difficult with the help of radiocarbon dating may determine or DNA analysis. In some island forms from the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, the Pacific region and indoaustralischen you go in some species even believe that they could have survived until shortly before the 16th century.

In the opinion of many scientists, especially the human being is either directly or indirectly responsible for the extinction of many bird species at this time. Scientifically proven this is the first colonization of the Pacific Islands 3500 years ago, where the endemic avifauna took damage by pathogens, over-hunting, egg collecting, habitat destruction or entrained Pacific rat (Rattus exulans ). Also for Australia to take some scholars to this, but what in the professional world is extremely controversial (see Quaternary extinctions ).

The following overview lists Vogeltaxa that have become extinct between 40,000 BC and 1500 AD:
