Discipline (academia)

Single Science (also: discipline, specialist, specialist science ) is a separate subject area in the higher education landscape, especially the university and the college.

Term

The science is broken down into sub-areas since ancient times. As part of the research and development of technological possibilities more individual sciences have always been redeveloped or separated from existing and independent entity.

There are different classifications for the classification of the sciences, such as the Dewey Decimal Classification. Earlier authors spoke of a tree of science as well as the division into individual sciences and universal science. A known, rough classification distinguishes natural sciences, humanities and sciences structure.

A distinction is made between individual sciences that are taught at universities ( academic discipline ), and the sciences that are operated outside of universities.

The classification of a field of knowledge as science is often very controversial. The addition to guided discussion is part of the scientific debate and promotes when it is done objectively, the subjects involved.

The resulting over time wealth of the individual sciences has often been perceived as fragmentation since the second half of the 20th century. Since then, the interdisciplinary nature of the individual sciences is attached more and more importance.

There are also cross-cutting disciplines that are a mixture of different subject areas, such as the economic computer science, which contains a core of own contents among other parts of computer science, mathematics, economics and communication science.

In a narrower sense, the term refers to a particular science antonym of philosophy, in the sense of a universal science, in contrast to the single science is not limited to specific sections of reality.
