Geography

Laterns located in the westernmost province of Austria, Vorarlberg, in the district of Feldkirch to 921 meters in the long-drawn Laternsertal and extends to the Furkajoch (1761 m). With a municipal area of ​​43.75 km ² laterns is the geographically largest municipality in the district of Feldkirch. 40.9 % of the area is forested, 45.3 % belong to the Alps. History

Already at the time of Romansh parts of the area were used for Alpine grazing and hunting economy. The main town in the valley Laternser was mentioned as Montem Clauturni documented in 1177 and still leads to the 17th century, the name Glaterns. The actual settlement was made, as with many settlements in the valleys of Vorarlberg, by the Walser at the beginning of the 14th century. The Habsburgs ruled the areas in Vorarlberg changing of Tyrol and Further Austria from ( Freiburg im Breisgau). From 1805 to 1814, the town belonged to Bavaria, then back to Austria. For the Austrian state of Vorarlberg Laterns heard since the foundation in 1861. The place was from 1945 to 1955 part of the French zone of occupation in Austria.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms of the municipality laterns this was awarded on 22 July 1938.
