Le Petit-Bornand-les-Glières

Le Petit- Bornand -les- Glière is a commune with 1136 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Haute-Savoie department in the Rhône -Alpes. It belongs to the community association Communauté de communes Faucigny - Glière. The inhabitants are called Borniands or Bornianches.

Geography

Le Petit- Bornand -les- Glière between Entremont in the south and Saint -Laurent in the north, 9 miles south-west of Bonneville and about 30 kilometers southeast of Geneva ( Switzerland ) in a valley of the French Alps. The D12 and the Borne, a mountain stream, running through the municipality. The area boasts many hamlets.

History

In the hamlets Lignières and Beffay there are sulfur springs, which were already known in Gallo-Roman times.

The parish of Petit- Bornand was in 1152 during the reign of Count Humbert III. (around 1120-1189 ) founder of Savoy by the Abbey of Entremont. The church was built in the 13th century, it is dedicated to Notre Dame de la Visitation and belonged to the parish of Saint -Victor in Geneva. The village Bornand was until 1292 owned by the Abbey of Entremont and the Count of Geneva, after that it belonged to the abbey to 1772 alone. In 1772, the Borniands for 12,000 livres bought freely.

Le Petit- Bornand -les- Glière belonged in 1789 to the State of Savoy, in 1792 the former Department of Mont- Blanc, which was later divided in Savoie and Haute -Savoie. The place finally received in 1793 in the wake of the French Revolution the status of a municipality (as Petit Bornand ) and 1801 the right to local self-government (as Petit- Bornand with and without the leading article). Since 1947, the church is called Le Petit- Bornand -les- Glière because it lies on the plateau Glières.

Personalities

Guillaume Fichet (* 1433 in Le Petit- Bornand -les- Glière, † 1480 ) was a teacher and later rector of the Sorbonne. Together with John Heynlin he ran from 1470 to 1473 the first printing press in France.
