Léon Cogniet

Léon Cogniet ( born August 29, 1794 in Paris, † November 20, 1880 ) was a French painter of the Neoclassicism and Romanticism.

Life

In May 1812 Cogniet came in his hometown at the École des Beaux -Arts and was a pupil there, among others, by Pierre Narcisse Guérin. Funded by his teachers, he was able to make his debut in 1814 at an exhibition of the Académie française with an image. 1815, his painting Briseis Achilles is returned with the "Prix de Rome (2nd class) " award, and in 1817 he was awarded for his picture of Helen liberation by Castor and Pollux the "Prix de Rome ( 1st class) ". Connected with this award was a generous traveling scholarship which enabled Cogniet to undertake a study tour of Italy and over five years to live in Rome. In the summer of 1817 he set out, but was still able to work with a smaller (later engraved by François Nicolas Delaistre ) to participate in the great exhibition of the Paris Salon and was also successful.

Already during his studies at the Art Academy closed Cogniet acquaintance with Jean Alaux, Eugène Delacroix, Théodore Géricault, Ary and Henry Scheffer.

In Rome Cogniet lived at the Villa Medici until he returned to France in the spring of 1822. Immediately after his return in 1824 he presented his works at an exhibition Marius amid the Ruins of Carthage and The Massacre of the Innocents. Both works, he had great success; the infanticide was soon spread by Williams Reynolds Stephens and Paul Girard as engraving.

1831 had Cogniet again a great success with his painting The Rape of Rebecca through the temple the Lord, that he - had created the year before - inspired by reading Ivanhoe by Walter Scott.

In 1843 he scored a sensational success with his Tintoretto, his dead daughter painting (later engraved by Achille Louis Martinet ). But the painting Battle of Mount Tabor 16th April 1799 and the Battle of Heliopolis on 2 May in 1800, he had designed together with Paul Girard and Félix Philippoteaux, convinced the public and official art criticism.

1855 took Cogniet with his portrait Vicomtesse de Noailles for the last time at the Paris Salon in part and retired after almost completely from public life. He created in the following years, hardly appreciable images, and exhibitions were - if at all - mostly older images to see at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1855, for example, still be known picture Tintoretto, his dead daughter painting.

1863 was Cogniet also began teaching at the École des Beaux -Arts, and retired into private life. In recent years he had hardly students; also his private studio he gave up in those years. On November 20, 1880, he died almost forgotten in the age of 94 years.

Cogniet had found early on to its own distinctive style. This influenced a large number of students and became influential for the end of the 19th century. In his early works still dominated the classical history painting; in his later oeuvre, he then turned to more of portrait painting. Less well known are today his subject matter and his church lithographs.

In addition to several other artists also portrayed the painter Léon Bonnat Cogniet.
