Les Bréseux

Les Bréseux is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Les Bréseux lies 750 m, 2 km north of Maîche and about 28 km south of the town of Montbéliard (air line). The village is located in the Jura, in a depression at the northern foot of Mont Miroir, at the edge of the high plateau of Maîche.

The area of ​​7.37 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The southern part of the area occupied by the basin of Les Bréseux. This belongs to the topographic catchment area of ​​Dessoubre, but has no above-ground rivers, because the rainwater seeps into the karst underground. The nearly one kilometer-wide depression opens west to the valley of the Dessoubre. It is flanked to the south from the heights of Mont Miroir, at the 910 m, the highest elevation of Les Bréseux is achieved. On its north side the cavity is lined by the broad ridge of Bourbet ( to 850 m), which is partly consisted of meadow and pasture land, some with wood. This ridge falls several areas with distinctive Kalkfelswänden (viewpoint Rochers du Bourbet ) for deep Dessoubre valley from where the northern boundary of the municipality runs mostly along the steep slope, partly above the steep escarpment.

At Les Bréseux next to the village itself includes various hamlets and isolated farms, including:

  • Mont Janson (775 m ) at the level of the trough north of Les Bréseux
  • Le Bourbet ( 776 m) at the height of Bourbet

Neighboring municipalities of Les Bréseux are Fleurey, Saint- Hippolyte and Montandon in the north, Thiébouhans in the east, the south and Maîche Mancenans- Lizerne and Orgeans -Blanche Fontaine in the West.

Attractions

The church of Saint -Michel was built in 1819 on the site of a chapel built in the early 17th century. It has, among other important stained glass by Alfred Manessier ( 1948-50 ).

Population

With 439 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Les Bréseux one of the small communities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1901 387 persons were still counted ), a continuous population growth was recorded since the mid-1970s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Les Bréseux was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture ( livestock and dairy farming ) and forestry embossed village. In addition, there are now several companies of local small businesses. Many workers are also commuters who engage in the surrounding larger towns of their work.

The village has good transport links. It lies on the main road D437 which leads from Montbéliard via Maîche after Morteau. Further road links exist with Mancenans- Lizerne and Thiébouhans.
