Liège–Bastogne–Liège

The bicycle race Liège -Bastogne -Liège (French Liège -Bastogne -Liège ), also (French The Oldest ) called La Doyenne, is the oldest still discharged one-day races and is considered one of the five so-called monuments of cycling.

History

The leading through the Walloon part of Belgium race was first run in 1892 and therefore bears the honorary name of La Doyenne ( the oldest ). The end of April annually held race was until 2004 part of the comprehensive ten race bike World Cup. After its abolition, it was from 2005 for three seasons for the newly introduced UCI ProTour, a series of the most important bike race of the year. Since 2011, the race is part of discipleship series UCI World Tour. Liege -Bastogne- Liege is considered due to its very hilly profile by the Walloon Ardennes as one of the most serious classics in cycling. The route varies only slightly from year to year.

Especially the second part of the 250 -kilometer race leads over several relatively short but steep climbs ( Cotes ), which often have race deciding character. Most famous is the Côte de la Redoute. It is characterized by the rapid succession of pitches in the final. Since 1987, La Doyenne well as a competition for young cyclists under 23 years ( U23 host ). This is one currently in the category 1.2U to UCI Europe Tour.
