Volta a Catalunya
The Tour of Catalonia ( Volta Ciclista a Catalunya) is a stage race in Spanish Catalonia. Originally in May / June and since 2011 discharged in March tour belonged since 2005 to the newly created UCI ProTour, a series of the most important bike race of the year. Since 2011, the race is part of the follow-up series UCI World Tour.
The Tour of Catalonia was first held in 1911 and applies in addition to the Basque Country Tour from one of the most important regional stage race in Spain. Record winner of today mainly by locals dominated the race is Mariano Cañardo with seven successes occur between 1928 and 1939.
Not to be confused with the Tour of Catalonia is the Setmana Catalana de Ciclisme ( Catalan week), which was held until 2005.
