Lipetsk

Lipetsk (Russian Липецк ) is a city in Russia and capital of the Lipetsk Oblast with 508 887 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

It is located about 375 km south-east of Moscow at Voronezh. Two bridges connect the city parts on the left ( Lewobereschny ) and right bank (the other three urban districts ).

History

A fortified Slavic settlement on site of the present city existed probably before the Mongol invasion of Rus in the 13th century. In the chronicles, it was first mentioned for the years 1283/84. 1284 the settlement was while fighting against the Tatar Baskaken ( governor ) Achmat completely destroyed. Then a village called Malyje Studjonki Lipskije is mentioned at this point again only in the first half of the 17th century.

Tsar Peter the Great built the place in 1703 as a settlement at the iron works Lipskije sawody re-found. In 1779 the city received its present name as the administrative center of a Ujesds the governorship of Tambov ( Tambov province in 1796 ).

In times of the Weimar Republic, the Reichswehr held from 1925 a secret airfield near Lipetsk, were on the developed by the Treaty of Versailles banned aircraft and weapons systems and tested and trained pilots from 1926. This drew the " Aviator inspection 1 (L)" in charge of the German side. The project was a central role to play in secret cooperation between the Reichswehr and the Red Army.

Today is the Lipetsk center of iron ore mining area with ironworks, engineering and chemical industries. There are also mineral springs and a sanatorium.

Economy and Transport

Lipetsk can be reached by train from Moscow ( Paveletskaya Station ), journey time about 10 hours. Lipetsk has a small airport, the Lipetsk airport to which offers a private Russian airline twice daily flights from Moscow Domodedovo airport from.

In the city of Lipetsk operate bus, trolleybus and tram lines.

The 1992 privatized steel works " Nowolipezker Metallurgical Kombinat " (now " OJSC Novolipetsk Steel" ), with about 48,000 workers, one of the largest employers in the region with an export rate of 64% ( 2005). It is part of the conglomerate of the " oligarchs " Vladimir Lisin. Other major industries are a tractor factory, which is broke at the moment, a factory for refrigerators and household appliances ( Stinol ) and an ice cream producer. A skilled workforce for these companies are trained at the Lipetsk State Technical University and numerous vocational schools in the city. The industry is south of the Voronezh River, located mainly in the district.
