Methodology

The criteria for " large" a wide variety of measures are used in the literature, including the following:

  • External length, width, surface area or volume of construction of the building
  • Clear height of the naves
  • Clear height of the crossing or a dome
  • Length of the nave, width of the transept
  • Outer constructive height of steeples or domes (highest point of the building above ground level)
  • Internal volume or floor space of the church interior
  • Capacity ( people)

In addition to the large number of possible criteria still takes the historical dimension. Some of the largest churches were originally built for a different purpose and later consecrated as a church, or built as a church and later rededicated, and some of the built in medieval towers and nave collapsed later.

From the peculiarities of the architectural history of the Christian world, there arise some regional peculiarities. So, there are many of the longest medieval cathedrals in England, most of the highest naves in France, many of the tallest church towers in Germany or formerly German cities as well as many of the largest on the width and base cathedrals in Spain.

The 1095 consecrated abbey church of Cluny III was in its time until the completion of St. Peter's Basilica with 187 m length of the longest church in the world, was destroyed during the French Revolution, for the most part.

The 10 longest naves ( inside dimensions )

Reliable estimate for the internal length of the church hall are even harder to find than the others cited herein extent. Sometimes only the length of the nave is specified (ie without crossing and choir ), sometimes tower hall or chapels are counted and sometimes not.

A well-known collection represent the brass star is on the floor of the nave of St. Peter's Basilica, with whom this basilica compares with other well-known churches. The amount of information for London, Lincoln, Beauvais and Stralsund are based on contemporary descriptions and are not verifiable. If the heights listed be wrong, could be used for the period before 1439 ( completion Strasbourg) following towers as the record holder in consideration:

  • Chartres Cathedral, South Tower, 105 m, 1160 (now higher North Tower was only 1500-13 ).
  • Lübeck Cathedral, 114/112 m, 1247
  • Freiburger Muenster, 116 m, 1330
  • Salisbury Cathedral, 123 m, early 14th century
  • St. Mary's Church (Lübeck ), 125 m, ~ 1350
  • St. Stephen's Cathedral (Vienna), 136 m, 1433

The towers in Lincoln, Stralsund, Beauvais, Strasbourg, Hamburg, Cologne and Rouen were the same time the respective highest building in the world of their time. Since the opening of the Washington Monument (1884 ) and the Eiffel Tower (1889 ) was no more sacred edifice record holder.

The 1988 completed dome of the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in Yamoussoukro / Ivory Coast is 158 meters high, " missed " the world record so three and a half meters. The still under construction Sagrada Familia in Barcelona is to receive 18 towers in the final stage, the highest so far is 115 m high, the not yet existing main tower would be about 170 feet, the highest in the world.
