List of premiers of the Northwest Territories

This list outlines the Prime Minister (English premier ) of the Northwest Territories in Canada. Prime Minister, there are officially only since 1995, previously the governance of public officials with changing names was exercised. In the Northwest Territories, the principle of consensus democracy is true, there are no parties. The Prime Minister is elected from the ranks of all the deputy of the Legislative Assembly.

From 1869 to 1876, the territory of the Lieutenant Governor ( lieutenant governor ) was administered the province of Manitoba until 1888 by its own vice-governor. From 1888 to 1891, Chairman of the Advisory Council of the Lieutenant Governor (Chairman of the Lieutenant Governor's Advisory Council ) was the government before, until 1897 the Chairman of the Executive Committee (Chairman of the Executive Committee). From 1897 to 1905 there was the first time a prime minister for the entire Northwest Territories, which at that time also the modern provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan included.

From 1905, the Governing Commissioner ( Governing Commissioner) was at the head of the government, combined the functions of a Prime Minister and a Deputy Governor. From 1980 to 1994, the head of government bore the title of Government Leader, but his powers corresponded to those of a prime minister.
