List of pumped-storage hydroelectric power stations

This list of pumped storage power plants contains located and planned in operating pumped storage power plants in Central Europe and in the world. It makes no claim to completeness.

Pumped storage power plants with fresh surface water storage ( selection)

The power stations are sorted in order of MW power. The particular construction or commissioning can be read at the annual figures.

Germany

In Germany, a pumped storage power of about 7 GW (gigawatt ) is installed. The power plants are designed for a useful life of 4-8 hours daily. This resulted for the year 2010, a total storage capacity of about 40 GWh. In 2006, the German pumped storage power plants generated 4,042 GWh of electrical energy. This was offset by a pumping work of 5,829 GWh, so that the average efficiency was about 70%.

In individual statements more plants can be found. However, only storage or hydroelectric power plants. This includes the power plant Eibele / Plant III with 0.65 MW in Bavaria, which was 1958/61 built as a pump storage power plant and expanded in 1971; today it is only used as a hydroelectric power plant.

Planning

  • Atdorf: pumped storage power plant in Atdorf Hotzenwald ( Schluchseewerke AG). It is scheduled for completion in 2018Vorlage: be the largest in Europe Future / In 4 years, with 1400 MW maximum power. The two pools with a difference in altitude of 600 m should be assigned a storage volume of 9 million to 10 million cubic meters. This corresponds to a working capacity of approximately 13 GWh.

  • Jochberg: The energy Allianz Bayern plans on Jochberg the pumped storage power plant Jochberg with 700 MW capacity. After five years of planning template: Future / In 4 years, and five years template: Future / In 5 years, building commissioning is 2023Vorlage: Future / done in 5 years.
  • Leinetal: The PSW is Leinetal of Hochtief in Freden with a commissioning 2020Vorlage: planned future / In 5 years, and an output of 200 MW.
  • Lip: Hochtief presented in July 2013 before the preliminary planning for a pumped storage power plant in Mörth in the district of Lippe; planned start 2021Vorlage: Future / In 5 years, scheduled power about 300 MW.
  • Nethe: The pumped storage power plant in Nethe Beverungen and Hoexter with 390 MW.
  • Porta Westfalica: A pumped storage power station underground in Porta Westfalica with a capacity between 100 and 150 MW.
  • Riedl: pumped storage power plant Riedl in Bavaria with a planned maximum power of 300 MW.
  • Rursee: The power company Trianel planned pumped storage power plant on the river Rur Rur Lake (159 million cubic meters) in the Eifel region with a capacity of 640 MW, but has also withdrawn its plans due to local political resistance.
  • Narrow water pumped storage power plant Schmalwasser in the Thuringian Forest ( Thüringer Trianel & remote water supply ) with a planned maximum capacity 1000 MW. In April 2013, the application documents were submitted to the regional planning process.
  • Schweich: Stadtwerke Trier plan the pumped storage power plant Schweich with a capacity of 300 MW, commissioning between 2019Vorlage: Future / In 5 years and 2020Vorlage: Future / In 5 years.
  • Waldeck: The PSW Waldeck II will be expanded by 300 MW, which approval has already been granted.

Austria

Switzerland

Most hydropower plants in Switzerland are designed as storage power plants. The following list includes those works which can also pump. Currently arise in the Swiss Alps several large power plants with underground pipes and engine nacelles.

Norway

Most hydropower plants in Norway are designed as storage power plants. Many of these plants have both an upper and a submarine, so that they could be converted relatively easily into a pumped storage power plant. Listed here are just power plants that are already designed as a pumped storage power plant, or where the application or the expansion to PSKW running.
