Froidchapelle is a municipality in the Belgian province of Hainaut. It consists of several villages and has 3831 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2012).
History
Remains of stone ovens in the forest of Hurtau be a presumption of prehistoric settlement. First mentioned was the place in the year 673 as Feroaldi Capella ( Chapel of Feroald ) in the will of the Holy Aldegonde, in turn, sister of the holy Waudru. From this name, the Merovingian settlement was finally Froid chapel in the 13th century.
Aldegonde had left the place to the double monastery of Maubeuge. There is then also mentioned in the 10th century by the Count of Hainault, who conquered much of the territory.
Attractions
Church
The nave and the pillars of the church of Sainte - Aldegonde date from the late 16th century. It was extended in 1643, the choir was made of bricks from the 17th century. Inside there is a pulpit from the 18th century and a marble altar of the Abbey of Liessies.
