Name of locomotives

The Württemberg State Railways has divided starting from 1845 onwards their locomotives into classes. The first division was continually sourcing the individual vehicles in Classes I to VII

This scheme proved to be impractical in use, so that in 1858 a new system was introduced.

  • A - Light Quick and Eilzuglokomotiven
  • B - Severe Quick and Eilzuglokomotiven
  • C - Light passenger locomotives
  • D - Heavy passenger locomotives
  • E - Easy freight locomotives
  • F - heavy freight locomotives
  • T - Tender locomotives

In some cases, the previous classes to easily recorded. In other cases, new buildings and conversions in a class were summarized in spite of different designs. Over time, the shortcomings of the system showed. In particular, the division into "light" and "heavy" locomotives was unhappy. In addition, the classes were no longer sufficient for new locomotives. Therefore, the schema has changed slightly from 1892. Available due to phase-out classes were re- occupied.

  • A to E - passenger locomotives
  • F to K - freight locomotives
  • T - Tender locomotives

Each class was divided again using lowercase letters to represent individual designs to enable certain features and Arabic numerals.

  • A - older locomotives
  • Aa - very old mature withdrawal,
  • C - compound ( compound drive )
  • D - duplex ( double engine = Mallet )
  • H - steam locomotive
  • N - branch line locomotive
  • Z - rack locomotive
  • S - 1000 mm narrow gauge track
  • Ss - narrow gauge locomotive 750 mm gauge

Furthermore, some specific names were not introduced as KL for small locomotives, DW for steam railcars BW for petrol railcars and AW for Akkumulatortriebwagen.

Name received the Württemberg locomotives until 1896. Acted as eponym usually geographical names (cities, rivers). In many cases, the locomotives were given names from the environment of the application. In a Umbeheimatung the name was then changed so much.

In addition to the name of the locomotives were also given numbers. Until 1890, numbered consecutively up to 377 as of this date newly purchased locomotives each class received a special group of numbers, usually a hundred numbers starting with 401 assigned.

During reconstruction, the locomotives were classified into a new class, but kept their operation number.

This remodeling activity can be divided into two periods divided: the first, from 1867 to 1887 ending period of reorganization under the generic machine masters Brockmann and Great 2'B older locomotives were rebuilt in steifachsige 1B machines and tank locomotives of various axis sequences. The generic machine masters Adolf Klose and Eugen Kittel the last existing 2'B locomotives were in the second conversion period 1887-1910 continue converted to tender locomotives and older 1B and C types, that had already emerged in part even by remodeling, the newer locomotive types adapted in appearance and performance.
