Long Distance Calling (band)

Long Distance Calling is a German post-rock band from Münster. The band was founded in 2006 and is available at Superball Music, a sub- label InsideOut Music under contract. The discography of the band consists of four studio albums. The band plays instrumental rock music with relatively long songs. The band's name can be seen as long distance as well as "Call of the wide distance ," according to the band. Main criteria for the choice of the band name was the harmony of words.

History

Early years (2005-2006)

In November 2005, met each other guitarist Florian Füntmann, bassist Jan Hoffmann and drummer Janosch Rathmer know. After several common jam sessions met with David Jordan added another guitarist to the band. The cast was completed by Reimut van Bonn in March 2006. All members were musically active before the foundation of long distance calling. Janosch Rathmer and Florian Füntmann were also active in the melodic death metal band Misery Speaks. David Jordan played for The Ghost Dance Movement and Reimut van Bonn at Muad'Dib drums. Bassist Jan Hoffmann played before in the metal band Dogday.

Originally a singer was sought. After the band over a period of several months trying out several candidates and could not find a suitable singer, the musicians opted for a " sound man" - in this case Reimut van Bonn - instead of a singer. Another argument against a singer was to let the music speak for itself. The end of 2006 published Long Distance Calling her demo DMNSTRTN. The title describes the word demonstration without vowels. By the press at the demo was well received. The Visions Magazine and Rock Hard voted DMNSTRTN for each demo of the month.

Satellite Bay and Avoid the Light (2007-2010)

The band signed a contract for an album with Viva Hate Records. After appearances by A Whisper in the Noise and a tour opening for 65daysofstatic, the band recorded in April 2007, within three days to the debut album Satellite Bay. The album was released in October of the same year and was well received by the critics. As a guest singer is heard Peter Dolving by the Swedish thrash metal band The Haunted in the song Built Without Hands. Speaking at a joint tour with the Swiss band Leech the split EP 090208 was incorporated in 2008. It was followed by other appearances, including with dredg and at the music festival Rock am Ring.

Here joined Jonas Renkse by the Swedish metal band Katatonia at the song Nearing Grave, acting as guest vocalist on. Avoid the Light was released in April 2009. Subsequently, Long Distance Calling repeatedly went on tour and played among other things, the opening act for bands such as Opeth, Katatonia or Anathema.

Long Distance Calling (2011-2012)

In spring 2011, the band worked in various jam sessions on their third, self-titled studio album, which was recorded in summer 2010 in the Horus Studios in Hannover. In the produced by the band together with Benjamin Schäfer album as a guest vocalist of Armored Saint and former Anthrax singer John Bush in the song Middleville heard. According to Drummer Janosch Rathmer the band was completely satisfied with one of their studio albums for the first time. Since the musicians wanted to make it clear that this album is intended to define the band Long Distance Calling was named after the band.

From the trade press, the album was again recorded positive throughout and voted Album of the week, for example, as the magazines Visions or Focus. For the song Into the Black Wide Open, the band turned her first music video. With Long Distance Calling, the band achieved their first chart entry, reaching rank 36 of the Media Control Charts. The editors of the German magazine Metal Hammer chose Long Distance Calling the best album of the year index Post-Hardcore/Rock/Metal. After an own headliner tour in autumn 2011, followed in the spring of 2012, a European tour supporting the Canadian progressive metal band Protest the Hero.

The Flood Inside (2012 to 2013)

In April 2012 the band announced the amicable separation of Reimut van Bonn. In September 2012, the band released their fourth studio album recorded in the megaphone recording studios in Arnsberg. After completion of the recordings, the band announced the entry of the former Fear -My- Thoughts - member Martin Fischer as a singer and keyboard player in the band. The fourth studio album The Flood Inside was released on March 1, 2013, and debuted at number 33 of the German and number 79 in the Swiss charts. Same time, a headlining tour began through Europe, where the band of the opening acts Sólstafir, Audrey Horne and Sahg was accompanied.

End of November 2013 played Long Distance Calling on the inaugural Metal Hammer Festival in Paradise Holiday Park White beach houses. The band donated all revenues from their online store made ​​on 22 November 2013, the humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders. Occasion of the fundraiser were the consequences of Typhoon Haiyan, who had taken care of especially in the Philippines for severe devastation. Instrumental EP ( since 2014)

After the second European tour, the band plans to take a purely instrumental Jam EP. The EP will be released in April or May 2014 the band's own label Avoid the Light Records. Funding for the project will be completed by crowdfunding via the Internet platform Pledge Music.

Style

Long Distance Calling play instrumental rock music. Through numerous repetitions of individual passages, the songs of the band are relatively long. The songs Horizon and Arecibo (Long Distance Calling) are the shortest in the band's history with a running time of 5:53 minutes each. The longest song is Apparitions with a playing time of 12:16 minutes. Some of the music is backed with voice samples. The song Fire in the Mountain for example, contains excerpts from Kafka's prose before the law. The most important influences call Long Distance Calling post-rock and progressive rock bands like Isis, Tool, Mogwai, dredg and Porcupine Tree. Since their self-titled album, Long Distance Calling seen rather as an instrumental rock band than as a post-rock band. Bassist Jan Hoffmann described the music of Long Distance Calling as a harder, more progressive and more rhythmic than that of other instrumental bands. On the fourth studio album The Flood Inside half of the songs contain vocals. Drummer Janosch Rathmer justified this by saying that the musicians wanted to do something new, as they were very pleased with the songs with vocals.
