Lovozero (rural locality)

Lovozero (Russian Ловозеро; Finnish Luujärvi; kildinsamisch Луяввьр, Lujawwr ) is a village in the Murmansk Oblast in northwestern Russia with 2871 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The distance to the regional capital Murmansk is 164 km in a north-westerly direction. The village is the administrative headquarters and after the urban-type settlement Rewda the second largest of the five villages of the Rajons Lovozero.

History

The settlement of the riverside Wirma near the lake of Lovozero site dates back to 1574.

The Sami language author and activist Alexandra Antonova lives in Lovozero.

Culture

In Lovozero now lives a large part of about 1,500 Sami the Russian Federation. Some of them preserves the kildinsamische language as a spoken language. Regularly Sami cultural events take place in Lovozero. Among the guests is the Sami singer Mari Boine.

Economy and infrastructure

Most important economic operation of the settlement is the reindeer herding collective operation " Tundra". Fishing, hunting and gathering wild fruits are also important. Two kilometers to the southeast, there is a helicopter base of the army.

The nearest railway station is located in 70 km distant Olenegorsk where a road leads.

At the site there is a monitoring station of SDCM system.
