Olenegorsk, Murmansk Oblast

Olenegorsk (Russian Оленегорск ) is a town in Murmansk Oblast (Russia) with 23 072 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

Olenegorsk located on the Kola Peninsula beyond the Arctic Circle, about 110 km south of Murmansk Oblasthauptstadt. In the area of ​​the city, the watershed between the Barents Sea runs (lakes Kachosero and Kolosero northwest of the city; outflow forms the Kola ) and the White Sea ( lake Permussosero east and the north end of Imandrasees southeast of the city).

History

The village was founded in 1916 as a settlement around the Olenja here built on the Murmansk railway station. The name is (literally russian Severny ols, North Hirsch) derived from the Russian word oils for deer, especially also Ren.

In connection with the start of production of iron ore from a deposit discovered in 1932 in 1949 the establishment of the city proper began. On March 27, 1957, the city charter was granted under the present name.
