Lower Niumi

Lower Niumi ( spelling variant: Lower Nuimi ) is one of 35 districts - the second highest level of administrative divisions - the West African nation of Gambia. It is one of six districts in the North Bank Region.

According to a calculation by 2013 there live about 51 787 inhabitants, the result of the last published census of 2003 was 44 491.

History

The name is derived from Niumi, a former small kingdom.

1977, the district was divided Niumi, with which the present districts of Lower and Upper Niumi emerged.

Geography

The district is bordered to the north by Senegal, to the east by Jokadu and on the southwest by Upper Niumi.

In Lower Niumi the Niumi National Park and Forest Park are Lohen.

Population

According to a survey of 1993 ( former census ), the largest ethnic group of the Wolof with a share of about three -tenths, followed by the Mandinka and Serer. The distribution in detail: Mandinka 24.9% 15.5 % Fula Wolof 30.7% 1.1% Jola 0.8 % Serahule 21.7 % Serer 0.1 % Aku 1.6 Manjago %, 2% Bambara and 1.6% other ethnicities.
