Madhavaram (Taluk)

The Madhavaram taluk (Tamil: மாதவரம் வட்டம் ) is a taluk ( subdistrict ) of Tiruvallur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Capital is the eponymous city Madhavaram.

Geography

The Madhavaram Taluk lies in the southeast of the district of Tiruvallur in the suburban belt of the metropolis Chennai ( Madras). It is bordered on the southeast and Ponneri taluks Ambattur in the north and the city of Chennai district in the south. To the east lies the coast of the Gulf of Bengal.

The Madhavaram Taluk is congruent with the block Puzhal. Its area is 117 square kilometers.

Population

According to the 2011 census, the taluk Madhavaram has 596 753 inhabitants. Its proximity to the metropolis of Chennai Taluk is highly urbanized and densely populated: 95.0 percent of the population is classified as urban, the population density is 5,100 inhabitants per square kilometer.

History

The Madhavaram taluk was established in 2009 as a splinter group from the Ambattur Taluk, who had experienced through the expansion of Chennai, a considerable population growth. Due to the expansion of the city of Chennai in 2011, most of the taluks Madhavaram Madhavaram, including the main town was incorporated into the city of Chennai.
