Madre de Dios is a province in the southern part of the department of Pando in the lowlands of the South American Andean Republic of Bolivia. The province is named after the river Río Madre de Dios, which forms the northern border of the province.

Location

The province is one of five provinces in the department of Pando. It is bordered on the north by the province Manuripi, on the southwest by the La Paz Department, and to the southeast by the Department of Beni.

It extends between 10 ° 54 'and 12 ° 28' south latitude and 66 ° 05 ' and 67 ° 58 ' west longitude, its length from south-west to north-east is 390 km, its width is up to 150 kilometers.

Population

The population of the province of Madre de Dios has risen in the past two decades at three times:

49.8 percent of the population are younger than 15 years, the literacy rate in the province is 82.4 percent.

99.3 percent of the population speaking Spanish, 0.7 percent Quechua, Aymara 0.1 percent, and 5.6 percent other indigenous languages ​​( 1992).

94.7 percent of the population have no access to electricity, 71.8 percent have no sanitary facilities (1992).

80.2 percent of the population are Catholics, 18.8 percent are Protestant (1992).

Structure

The Madre de Dios province is divided into three municipios ( counties ):

  • Municipio Puerto Gonzalo Moreno ( 1275 km ²) in the eastern part of the province - 5,486 inhabitants - 4.3 inhabitants / km ² (2005)
  • The municipality of San Lorenzo ( 3086 km ²) in the central part of the province - 4,293 inhabitants - 1.4 inhabitants / km ² (2010)
  • Municipality of Sena ( 7631 km ²) in the western part of the province - 2,511 inhabitants - 0.3 inhabitants / km ² (2010)
