Maffra

Maffra is a town in the central Gippsland in Victoria, Australia, 220 kilometers east of Melbourne. It belongs to the Wellington Shire Local Government Area. Its economy relies mainly on dairy and other agriculture. There are eight works of Murray Goulburn Cooperative in Victoria. Maffra is located off the Princes Highway at the height of Sale. At the 2006 census, a population of 4149 was noted.

History

The history of the city began with a branch operation of the first cattle station in the area, Boisdale, the Lachlan Macalister after a village on the island of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides in Scotland. The village was initially called Shepford, but Macalister named it " Maffra " after the Portuguese town of Mafra, where he served in the Napoleonic War.

Maffra has been declared in the 1860s, the city, and the first post office was opened on 20 July 1864.

It has long been the most important city for cattle breeding and processing in the central Gippsland and had for many years the only sugar factory in the country. The sugar beet museum in Port of Maffra Park shows the remnants of the sugar industry. The building is an old converted Wägehaus and with pine boards of the house of Charles and Grace Quirk, one of the first farmhouses of Maffra, in disguise.

In Maffra there is a Mardi Gras in March, the Maffra and District Agricultural, Pastoral and Horticultural Show in October and a tennis competition at Easter.

Maffra is to have one of the most beautiful High Streets in Victoria (Johnson Street). The Parliament of the Wellington Shire has indeed can be removed by the roadside the more than 100 year old trees because they were sick, but it has replaced by young oaks.

The city has two elementary schools, the Maffra Primary School and St Mary's Primary School ( Catholic). Also there is a state, secondary school, the ' Maffra Secondary College '', which can hold about 700 students. This school has a tight curriculum and is involved in a number of community based programs.

The Maffra Shed, a rallying point for lovers of vintage cars is now complete. This is an old sugar factory, which has breathed new life into the Car Club. There, classic car shows are held, which attracts many people from the surrounding area.

The Maffra Historical Society is working on the Bellbird Corner, and transformed this area again in the popular picnic spot, which he had in the early years of the 20th century.

Sports

The city has a football team that plays in the Gippsland Football League.

Maffra is also home to a hockey club, playing their men's, women's and junior teams in the East Gippsland Hockey Association.

The U14 boys team of basketball clubs in 2008 reached the Australian National Championship in Darwin, for which they qualified by winning the state championship of Victoria. They played in the Victorian Junior Basketball League ( VJBL ), the highest league in Victoria for young basketball players.

The football seniors have won six championships in seven years, two of them three times in a row (2004 won Traralgon ).
