Magni Wentzel

Magni Wentzel ( born June 28, 1945 in Oslo) is a Norwegian singer and guitarist who has emerged despite a classical education mainly in the jazz field.

Life and work

Wentzel comes from a musical family; her mother was a singer, her father a violinist in the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. She sang with five years in the children's theater Totenlaget Barneteater. Then she learned to play guitar and already she was twelve years as a jazz singer. The age of fourteen, she released her first jazz record That Old Feeling. After she was admitted to the university as an opera singer at the Operahøgskole in Oslo, she decided to learn guitar in Spain from 1963. In 1967, she appeared there with Pony Poindexter and Tete Montoliu with. Back in Oslo, she joined with the rhythm & blues band her cousin, Geir Wentzel on. Then she worked with jazz musicians such as Einar Iversen and Egil Kapstad and founded his own band. She went from 1977 on as a soloist with the Danish Radio Big Band and the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra. They also toured with Charlie Ventura.

Opening a Munch exhibition, she joined in 1978 as a classical guitarist at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC on. In 1986, she played in a recording of the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, the solo guitar in the Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquín Rodrigo. In the next few years she worked with Roger Kellaway, Red Mitchell, Niels -Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Art Farmer and Mads Vinding together. Peter Gullin wrote for them, " Far, Far Away Where Longing Lives" (1990). She also appeared in The Tales of Hoffmann.

Prizes and awards

Wentzel received the 1988 Gammleng Award; In 1998 she was awarded with a buddy pinches.
