Maiella National Park

The Majella National Park is a national park in Italy's Abruzzo region. It was established in 1991 and covers an area of 74 095 hectares of mostly mountainous terrain.

25,500 ha of the core zone of the national park are certified as so-called " PAN Parks Wilderness Area " and belong to the Network of European Wildlife sanctuaries.

Overall situation

55 % of the park located above 2000m. Here come the front in Abruzzo and over 45 % of people living in Italy over 70% of mammal species in the park area. In about 50 % different habitats of different altitudes 2114 plant species were recorded, including 142 endemic species. Statistically, 65% before the Abruzzo and 37 % of the Italian plant species in the National Park.

Animals in the park

In the Majella National Park many different animal species: Apennine wolves, Marsican brown bears, chamois, otters, snow voles, spectacled salamander, golden eagles, choughs, hawks, plovers, meadow viper and smooth snakes.

Plants in the Park

The special features in the park, which has 12 % of the endemic plant species from all over Italy, including the Columbine Majella and Reichenbach's Butterwort. The exposure than most southern Alpine region in Europe has also led to floral relics from the past, to which the Driade and the Yellow Alpenmohn or Hängebirke belong. Furthermore, there is edelweiss, gentian and alpine daisy to find. For trees partially crippled in shape and deeper lying are below 1800m mountain pines, and beech forests, which are mixed with holly, maple, Speierling, yew and other species.
