Civitella Messer Raimondo

Civitella Messer Raimondo is a 859 inhabitants and 12 km ² comprehensive community near Fara San Martino and Colle San Leonardo and is located in the province of Chieti.

Borders the following municipalities: Casoli, Fara San Martino, Gessopalena, Lama dei Peligni and Palombaro.

History

The village was called until 1863 Civitella. The rock paintings in the cave of La Pineda are from the Paleolithic. In the area of Fonte Liberatori and on a hill in Piano archaeological finds have been unearthed. There, among other prehistoric tombs were found with grave goods, including the establishment in bronze. On the hill they found mosaics from the Roman period. However, they found no surviving documents from the Roman period. In the 12th century the village was founded as Civitellam. In the 14th century Civitella was the fief of Raymond Annichinis. The last feudal lord of the village were the Baglioni, whose name was given to the castle in the community.

Attractions

  • The Palazzo Gattone standing on a top of a hill. The entrance is on a street where the entrance is secured by a portal of stone blocks. On the eastern side of the street are original works by some structures, including the porch with a barrel vault.
  • The Castle of Count Baglioni ( Castello Baglioni ). It stands on the Piazza Roma and has a rectangular plan. On the eastern front, the castle has been a bastion. The building dates from the 18th century.
  • The Church of St. Savior ( Santissimo Salvatore ). According to literature sources, the church dates from the thirteenth century. It was recently restored. The portal is surmounted by a triangular pediment, in which is a mosaic of St. Erasmus. The columns and pilasters are painted imitation marble.

In the surroundings of the village vines of Montepulciano for the DOC - cultivated wine Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.
