Manoppello

Manoppello is an Italian commune in the province of Pescara in the Abruzzo region with about 7049 inhabitants. The community is located within the Majella National Park.

The foundation of the town dates back to Roman times. The place name is derived from the Latin Manipulus, which literally means a handful and as maniple designated a sub-unit of the Legion of the Roman army.

Borders the following municipalities: Alanno, Casalincontrada (CH), Chieti (CH), Lettomanoppello, Rosciano, Serramonacesca and Turrivalignani.

The place has become in recent years primarily due to an image of Christ, the veil of Manoppello, known to the Pope Benedict XVI. worshiped at his pilgrimage to Manoppello on 1 September 2006. Four years later, on November 3, 2010, gave the church, Pope Benedict XVI. in Rome for the keys to the city.
