Picciano

Picciano is a 1359 inhabitants and 7 km ² comprehensive community near Collecorvino and Elice and is located in the province of Pescara.

Borders the following municipalities: Collecorvino, Elice, Loreto Aprutino, penne and Città Sant'Angelo.

History

Picciano is first mentioned in 1049 in the Charter Offersionis. Bernardo, Count of Penne, donated land and buildings for the establishment of a Benedictine abbey in his field. This is the first evidence for the existence of a settlement called Picciano. There are several legends about the origin of the name Picciano. The city was founded by a group of pastors in the early Middle Ages as Piczano.

Sights and traditions

The church of Santa Maria del Soccorso in Picciano was built at the beginning of the 19th century. It was built of brick, the bell tower was not built as planned.

The tradition of folk music in Picciano and the surrounding villages is still preserved. In groups, traditional songs are sung and celebrations, the groups perform their works composed before. The museum Museo delle Arti Traditions ed Contadine ( an ethnographic museum ) shows and evokes life in Picciano the past centuries.
