Civitella Casanova

Civitella Casanova is a municipality with 1830 inhabitants and is located near Villa Celiera and Vicoli in the province of Pescara. A part of the territory of the municipality lies within the boundaries of the National Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga.

Geography

Among the districts ( fractions) are Vestea, Baffo, Cent Elle, Fazio, Madonna delle Grazie, Mirabello, Topanera, Fontebruna, Pettorano, San Giuseppe, Santanello and Pastini.

Borders the following municipalities: Carpineto della Nora, Castel del Monte, Civitaquana, Loreto Aprutino, Montebello di Bertona, penne, Vicoli and Villa Celiera.

History

In the hamlet of San Benedetto objects and buildings have been excavated from the Roman period. An underground aqueduct of the Roman period has been found. Civitella is first mentioned in the Chronica S. Monasterii Casinensis. The village was named at its inception Civitella dell'Abbadia. In the 12th century there was an abbey of the same name. The monastery survived seven centuries almost undamaged. The monastery, located on the border to the municipality of Villa Celiera today is only a small ruin.

Attractions

The parish church of Santa Maria delle Grazie from the 16th century is one of three churches in the community. The San Michele Arcangelo church in the fraction Vestea was also built in the Renaissance era. The Chiesa della Madonna della Cona is outside the village.

Specialty

In the surroundings of the village vines of Montepulciano are grown for the DOC wine Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.
