Tocco da Casauria

Tocco da Casauria is a municipality with 2680 inhabitants and is located near Castiglione a Casauria and Bolognano in the province of Pescara.

Geography

Among the districts ( fractions) are Francoli, Marano, Osservanza and Rovetone.

Borders the following municipalities: Bolognano, Bussi sul Tirino, Castiglione a Casauria, Torre de ' Passeri, Popoli and Salle.

History

In the year 872 the town of Tocco da Casauria is first mentioned. In the thirteenth century the Church of S. Eustachio and the castle were built Caracciolo. In the earthquakes in the years 1456 and 1706 a large part of the village was destroyed.

Attractions

The Church of S. Eustachio was built in the twelfth century. The building was partially destroyed by the earthquake of 1706 and immediately rebuilt. Are embedded in the facade are two magnificent high reliefs from the sixteenth century. The interior consists of three naves.

The Caracciolo Castle was built in 1187-1220. After the castle was badly damaged in the earthquake of 1456, was rebuilt in the Renaissance style with a rectangular shape of the towers and courtyards around. At that time the family lived Scali Caracciolo from Scafa in the castle, today the castle is owned by the municipality.

Specialty

In the surroundings of the village vines of Montepulciano are grown for the DOC wine Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. In Tocco da Casauria much olive oil is produced.
