Maipú Department, Mendoza

The department Maipú is located in the center of the province of Mendoza in western Argentina and is one of 18 administrative units in the province. Together with the departments Capital, Las Heras, Guaymallén, Luján de Cuyo and Godoy Cruz is the agglomeration Gran Mendoza.

It is bordered on the north by the departments of Lavalle and Guaymallén, on the east by the department of San Martín, on the southeast by the Department of Junín, on the southwest by the Department of Luján de Cuyo and the west by the department of Godoy Cruz.

The capital of the department of Maipú is the same Maipú.

Geography

The department is a low level with a slight slope from southwest to northeast. From a geological point of view, this level is a large sedimentary basin, the edges of which are formed to the west by the Andes and on the east by the granite elevations of the Zócalo de San Luis. In the extreme south are the summit of Cerro de Lunlunta and Cerro Barrancas.

The middle reaches of the Río Mendoza crosses the extreme south of the department by the distritos Lunlunta, Cruz de Piedra, Barrancas, Rodeo del Medio, Fray Luis Beltrán y San Roque. He leads a little water. Only in the summer and during the sand removal of the dam Cipoletti the water level rises a little.

Climate

The department has a tend to hot, moderately dry climate. The maximum temperatures reached 42.7 ° C, minimum temperatures -9.2 ° C. The annual rainfall is around 200 mm. The prevailing wind directions are west / southwest.

History

The department was founded on May 31, 1858 by the then Gobernador of Mendoza, Juan Cornelio Moyano. It was named in memory of the Battle of Maipú, which was held in 1818 during the Wars of Independence in Chile.

Economy

The economic life of the department is characterized by orchards and vineyards. The number of wineries is large and for many years the department was the largest wine producer in the Cuyo region in Argentina. In addition, there are a number of establishments in the food industry.

Sports

Maipú is the home of the football club Club Deportivo Maipú, which plays in the fourth division.
