Mapei (cycling team)

Under the name of the Italian chemical products manufacturer MAPEI changed its name from 1993 to 2002, an international cycling team.

Mapei is considered the most successful cycling team of the 1990s. A total of eight times in nine years, the team ended the cycling season in first place in the UCI World Ranking (1994-2000, 2002). In addition, the team five times the team standings of the cycling World Cup won.

The team with classic fighters such as Johan Museeuw and Michele Bartoli was especially successful in the classical one-day race of the spring. As almost unbeatable Mapei was especially at Paris- Roubaix, where the team won five times in six years. Twice (1996 and 1998 ) conquered Mapei in Roubaix while even the first three places. Four times won Mapei riders in their respective national teams the road bike World Cup.

Less dominant Mapei was with the great country tours. The only really successful stage race specialist in the history Mapeis was Tony Rominger, the Vuelta a España and the 1995 Giro d' Italia won for the team in 1994. At the Tour de France Mapei has always played only a minor role.

The official name of the team changed due to various co-sponsors several times. The team drove under the following names: Mapei (1993 ) Mapei - Clas (1994 ), Mapei - GB ( 1995-1997), Mapei - Bricobi (1998), Mapei - Quick Step (1999-2002). After the 2002 season, Mapei retired from cycling sponsorship. Indirect successor of the Mapei team since the 2003 season, the Belgian team Quick Step - Davitamon, who took some drivers from Mapei.
