Maria Leontyavna Itkina

Marija Leontjewna Itkina (. Мария Леонтьевна Иткина Russian, English transcription Mariya Itkina; born February 3, 1932 in Smolensk ) is a Belarusian athlete who had - starting for the Soviet Union - was successful in the period 1954-1964 in the sprint. The special discipline were the 400 m, over which they ran the world record several times. She was a member of the Association Pischtschewik ( Пищевик ) in Minsk.

In Soviet championships over 100 m, 200 m, 400 m and 4x100 m she won a total of 32 medals. She ran about 30 Soviet records, including eleven over 400 m. She was the first Soviet athlete, who remained about 200 m under 24 s. She participated in three European Championships and won a total of five medals, including four gold. Less successful she was at the Olympics. She participated three times, but failed to win a medal. Itkina is now chairman of the Belarusian Association athletes.

  • Gold over 400 m in 53.4 s before the Briton Joy Grieveson in 53.9 s and the Dutch Tilly van der Swaard in 54.4 s

  • World Student Games of the IUE 1954 in Budapest: Silver 200 m in 24.2 s behind Christa Stubnick ( gold in 23.6 s ) and bronze over 100m in 11.9 sec behind Christa Stubnick and Wera Krepkina, both 11.8 s

  • 1957 in Moscow: Silver 200 m in 24.0 s and bronze over 400m in 54.7 sec behind Antonina Chomutowa ( gold in 54.4 s ) and Ursula Donath ( silver in 54.7 s )
