Marignier

Marignier is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Marignier is on 473 m above sea level. M., about halfway between Bonneville and Cluses, approximately 30 km east-southeast of the city of Geneva (air line). The village is located on the northern edge of the broad Arvetals, both sides of the Giffre river, in the Savoy Alps at the eastern foot of the Môle, in Faucigny.

The area of ​​19.97 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the middle Arvetals. The southern boundary runs along the Arve, which here flows in a wide Talniederung from east to west. History

The name goes back to Mariniacum, the possession of a person named Marinius. Since the 13th century Marignier was a parish.

Attractions

The village church of Marignier got its present shape in the new construction in the 20th century; only the bell tower of the earlier building from the 18th century, was also included. Also from the 18th century comes the old bridge over the Giffre.

Population

With 6228 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Marignier one of the larger towns in the Haute-Savoie region.
