Marin Čilić

Marin Cilic ( born September 28, 1988 in Medjugorje, SR Bosnia and Herzegovina, SFR Yugoslavia) is a Croatian tennis player.

Career

2004-2007

2005 Čilić won the French Open in the junior competition and led the junior world rankings. In the same year he turned professional. In 2006, Čilić his debut in the Davis Cup.

2007 was the Croat at the Australian Open for the first time in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament. In the first round he lost to the Serb Ilija Bozoljac with 2:6, 4:6 and 1:6. In February he defeated in the Davis Cup match against Germany Benjamin Becker, but could not prevent the resignation of Croatia.

In the first round of the French Open Cilic Thierry Ascione subject from France with 2:6, 2:6 and 1:6. When grass tournament in Queens Čilić hit surprisingly in the first round with Tim Henman 7:65, 2:6 and 6:4. With further victories over Alejandro Falla and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of Croat reached the quarterfinals. There he was defeated by eventual tournament winner Andy Roddick almost 4:6 and 6:75. At Wimbledon Čilić then defeated in the first round Gilles Simon 6-3, 5:7, 4:6, 6:4 and 3:6.

2008: First victory at an ATP tournament

Cilic reached the second round, in which he lost to James Blake at the Australian Open. At the French Open, he was eliminated in the second round, but reached the second round at Wimbledon, where he lost to Arnaud Clément. Čilić represented Croatia at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, where he was eliminated in the second round against the Chilean Fernando González. In August 2008 he won his first ATP tournament at the Pilot Pen Tennis in New Haven with a victory 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 over the Americans Mardy Fish. At his debut at the U.S. Open Cilic reached the third round, where he lost to Serbia's Novak Djokovic in four sets.

2009-2012

The Croatian has already won with a 6:4, 7:63 victory over Somdev Devvarman Indian his second ATP Tour title at the beginning of the year in Chennai, India. At Wimbledon, he made the move into the third round where he lost to Tommy Haas in five sets. At the U.S. Open in September, he played his most successful Grand Slam tournament. He defeated in the second round to set two Andy Murray 7-5, 6-2, 6-2, but lost in the quarterfinals in four sets to eventual champion Juan Martín del Potro.

Right at the beginning of the 2010 season, he won the tournament in Chennai and thus defended his title. In the final he defeated Stanislas Wawrinka with the Swiss 7:6 and 7:6. At the Australian Open Cilic reached the semifinals, where he lost to Andy Murray in four sets. At the very next tournament in Zagreb, where he competed as the defending champion, he won for the second time the title against the unseeded German Michael Berrer in three sets 6:4, 6:75 and 6:3. This was, after the victory in Chennai in January, his second title within two months. In February 2010 he also undertook Goran Ivanisevic with a new coach.

The Wimbledon Championships 2012 Čilić the second- longest match in the tournament's history against the Americans Sam Querrey won by five and a half hours of 7:66, 6:4, 6:72, 6:73 and 17:15. He failed in the second round to Andy Murray.

2013: doping ban

As part of the BMW Open 2013 Marin Cilic tested positive for nikethamide at a doping test. Čilić stated to have taken the remedy unknowingly purchased in a pharmacy on a tablet to be. Since this no performance -enhancing intent, he received a reduced ban of nine months, which applied retroactively from 1 May 2013 to 31 January 2014. The International Sports Court reduced the penalty then again on only four months, as he as not so serious considered the debt Čilićs as the Arbitration Court of the ITF. This Čilić was eligible to play again from the Masters Tournament in Paris.
