Matua (island)

Matua (Russian Матуа; jap松 轮 岛, Matsua -tō ) is an island belonging to Russia the central Kurilengruppe. Its area is 52 km ². 30 km southwest lies Rasschua (罗 处 和 岛, Rasutsua -tō ), 18 km north-east of the small island Raikoke (雷公 计 岛, Raikoke -tō ).

Administratively, the island of Matua belongs to the Sakhalin Oblast.

Near the northwest tip of the island lies the layer of volcanic Sarytschew, one of the most active volcanoes in the Kuril Islands with a height of 1496 m. After 20 years of dormancy occurred on 12 June 2009, a violent outbreak.
