Mediterranean Games

The Mediterranean Games are a sporting event, attended by the nations bordering the Mediterranean. The Comité is responsible for the international des Jeux Games méditerranéens.

The games go back to an idea Muhammed Taher Pasha, the Egyptian, then President of the National Olympic Committee of Egypt, who proposed to host these Games at the Olympic Summer Games 1948.

The first Mediterranean Games were held in 1951 and were initially always one year before the Summer Olympic Games take place. Since 1993, they are each held one year after this. The 17th Mediterranean Games were held in Turkey from 20 to 30 June 2013.

  • Africa: Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia
  • Asia: Lebanon, Syria
  • Europe: Albania, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cyprus, Croatia, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Monaco, San Marino, Serbia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Spain, Turkey
  • The only country that is located on the Mediterranean and not allowed to participate in the Mediterranean Games, is Israel, otherwise the Arab participants threaten to boycott the games for political reasons.
  • The countries that have no Mediterranean coast and still participate, are Andorra, Macedonia, Serbia and San Marino.
