Menemeni (Greek Μενεμένη ( f sg ) ) is de facto a district west of the center of Thessaloniki and de jure a district of the municipality Ambelokipi - Menemeni in the Regional District Thessaloniki, the Greek region of Central Macedonia. By 2010 it was a separate municipality.

History

At the foundation of the administrative unit of the Municipality of Thessaloniki on May 3, 1918 Menemeni did not exist. The area of Menemeni belonged to the municipality of Thessaloniki .. The existence began in 1922 due to the influx of Greek refugees from Asia Minor after the Greek defeat in the Greco- Turkish war 1912-1922 and the subsequent 1923 agreed in the Treaty of Lausanne " population exchange " between the Greek ( Greek Orthodox ) population on Turkish territory and the Turkish ( Muslim ) population on Greek territory. 1926 Menemeni was cleaved from the Municipality of Thessaloniki and assigned to the municipality Harmanköy ( Charmankioi ). Just three years later, the community Harmankioi was dissolved again and assigned to the Municipality of Thessaloniki. These administrative reorganization had only endure until 1934: the settlements Neo Charmankioi, Neos Vosporos and Nea Menemeni were summarized to community Menemeni and split of the Municipality of Thessaloniki again. This church was in 2010 merged with the neighboring Ambelokipi, the two communities continue to exist as municipal districts. The seat of the new municipality is Ambelokipi.

Population, administration and politics

The community recorded in the years 1981-2001, as for many other towns and villages in the metropolitan area of Thessaloniki an increase in population. The increase mainly took place in the 1990s. 1981 lived in Menemeni 12,414 people, 12,932 in 1991, 15,133 in 2001 and 14,746 in 2011 (figures in each case determined by censuses ). The municipality consists of the quarters Menemeni Vosporos, Agios Nektarios, Agia Varvara and Lachanokipi.

Traffic

Public transport in Menemeni is determined by the buses of OASTH; performed ( ΟΑΣΘ Organismos Astikon Sygkoinonion Thessaloniki, transport carrier company of Thessaloniki ). The expansion of the currently under construction metro of Thessaloniki after Menemeni is under discussion.

Menemeni is twinned with the Turkish city menemen in the province of Izmir.
