Mérey -sous -Montrond is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Mérey -sous -Montrond is located on 460 m above sea level, about 10 km south of the city of Besançon (air line). The village is located in the Jura, on the first plateau between the Jura - edge range in the north and the level of Malbrans in the south, at the northern foot of the hill of Mérey.

The area of ​​10.79 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the cuesta landscape of western French Jura. The main part of the area is taken from the plateau of Mérey, which is an average 450 m. It is (in particular the Grand Bois in the north) consisted partly of arable and meadow land, partly by forest. The entire plateau has no above-ground rivers, because the rainwater seeps into the karst underground. The landscape is characterized by various karst phenomena such as sinkholes, karst fields covered, caves and bays. South of the village goes to the communal land of Mont, on the 522 meters, the highest elevation of Mérey -sous -Montrond is achieved. History

In the Middle Ages Mérey belonged to the rule Montrond. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France. To a field change occurred in 1822, when the previously independent Granges du Liège was incorporated into Mérey -sous -Montrond. Today Mérey -sous -Montrond is a member of the 24 localities comprehensive community association Communauté de communes du Pays d' Ornans.

Attractions

The village church of Mérey -sous -Montrond was built in the period 1839-1841. In the center numerous farmhouses are preserved in the characteristic style of the Franche -Comté from the 17th to 19th centuries. In the forested areas of the Grand Bois to the Château de Grange is cery. Worth a visit is also the Karst Trail of Mérey.

Population

With 436 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Mérey -sous -Montrond one of the small communities of the department of Doubs. Once the population has consistently had in the 20th century to the mid-1970s in the range of approximately 180 people, since a striking population growth was recorded.
