Michel Bastos (2013 )
Michel Fernandes Bastos (born 2 August 1983 Pelotas ) is a Brazilian footballer who also has French citizenship. He currently stands at al Ain Club under contract, but has been playing in January 2014 on loan at AS Roma.
Career
Clubs
Beginnings and time in the Netherlands
Bastos comes from the youth department of the EC Pelotas. In summer 2001, the then 18- year-old midfielder moved to Europe for the Dutch club Feyenoord Rotterdam. After his first season there, he was lent to the Erstligaaufsteiger Excelsior Rotterdam in the city to get some match practice. But his breakthrough did not make Bastos in Europe at this time. He did not get beyond the Joker role and could rarely convince.
Brazil
After two years in the Netherlands, he therefore went back to Brazil, where he played half a year for Atlético Paranaense and was subsequently awarded for one year at Gremio and Figueirense FC. For Gremio he scored four goals and prepared bunch of other stuff before. In Figueirense FC he was a regular player and performer and met on average every third game.
OSC Lille
In summer 2006, Bastos was for three million euros to the French first division club Lille OSC. His first game for Lille, he completed the season opening in a 2-1 away win over Stade Rennes on 5 August 2006. During Derby du Nord between RC Lens and Lille he scored on matchday 20 of the 2006/07 season then his first goal Lille. At the end of the season he had scored three goals in the league. In the following seasons, he increased his goal threat significantly. So he met in the 2007/ 08 season eight times in the league and prepared two more goals before. 2008/ 09 he was charged with 14-point game hits fourth scorer and was selected in the Team of the Year.
Olympique Lyon
After this successful season Bastos 2009/10, joined as a replacement for the migrated within Juninho Ligue 1 for 18 million euros to Olympique Lyon. With Lyon he moved into the semifinals of the Champions League, in which his club eventually failed in the German record champion Bayern Munich. In the championship, the second place in the table remained behind Olympique Marseille. Bastos met the high expectations in Lyon, was with ten goals in 32 league games, a free-scoring midfielder and ultimately also impressed coach Dunga of his qualities. 21 February 2010 in a 4-0 win against FC Sochaux he had a hat-trick within 21 minutes. The season 2010/11 was similar to the previous one. Although he made fewer goals in the league, but prepared more hits before and scored more goals in the Champions League. The 2011/12 season was disappointing for Bastos at the international level: the team was indeed in the Champions League qualifier against Rubin Kazan through, but played a weak group stage and was only second. In the next round you different surprise against APOEL Nicosia. Also in the league is qualified Bastos ' club only for the UEFA Europa League. For the 2012/13 season, he was not set for the first time on the left side of the offensive. He only came to brief appearances, but scored five goals in 726 minutes. FC Schalke 04
In January 2013, the FC Schalke 04 Bastos lent out by 30 June 2014. Schalke also secured a purchase option. Bastos made his first competitive match for Schalke on 2 February 2013 in the 1-2 home defeat by SpVgg Greuther Fürth and achieved in this case the Schalke hit. On February 16, 2013, he scored in the away match against 1 FSV Mainz 05 (2-2 ) both goals for Schalke. In the Champions League quarter-finals against Galatasaray, he scored his first goal for Schalke 04 in this competition. Beginning of August 2013 left Bastos FC Schalke 04 prematurely. Reason was an option included in the contract, which stated that the S04 had to make a tender offer for Bastos within five days as soon as a third club makes an offer. After Bastos even asked for a change in the lending transaction with Lyon was dissolved.
Al Ain Club
After the end of the lending arrangement Bastos joined the al Ain Club where he signed a three-year contract. In January 2014, he moved on loan to Serie A for AS Roma with a purchase option of € 3.5 million.
National
Despite good performance in Lille Bastos was not nominated until 2009 for the national team of Brazil. It was not until his move to Lyon brought him into focus by the then coach Carlos Dunga. On 27 October 2009 the winger was first nominated for the colors of his country in the squad the Selecao. On 14 November, he finally came to his debut. In the 1-0 victory against England Bastos ran on at left-back. Although he usually plays in the club in midfield, he ran in subsequent games of the national selection as a left defender and cemented his place in the starting XI. In qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 2010 Bastos denied any single game, but was nevertheless called by coach Dunga in May 2010 in the World Cup squad. During the tournament Bastos trunk strength was in the position of left-back, where it was used in five out of five games. In the quarterfinals against the Netherlands, the team was eliminated disappointing. Ahead of the World Cup so far he succeeded his single hit for Brazil when he was able to make a hit in a 3-0 victory in the friendly match on 2 June 2010 against Zimbabwe.
Play
Michel Bastos is known despite his Brazilian origin not for excessive technology. He is flexible and convinces with precise passing game. Primarily it is used in the left midfield and ensures with its very hard left shot for numerous Torsituationen. Bastos has however already played at right midfield and there could also thanks to its flexibility, which primarily manifested itself in the form of dribbling inward and subsequent Torabschlüssen convince.
