Mile One Centre

The Mile One Centre is a multi-purpose event and sports arena in downtown St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The hall can accommodate up to 7000 spectators and is currently the home arena of the St. John's IceCaps of the American Hockey League. The arena was opened in May 2001 under the name Mile One Stadium, which replaced the old Memorial Stadium. The name Mile One developed by because the arena at the beginning of the Trans-Canada Highway, which runs through the whole country, is right.

Events

Hockey

First ice hockey team in the Mile One Centre were the St. John's Maple Leafs, the farm team of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the American Hockey League, which fought out their home games there between 2001 and 2005. In February 2002, also found the AHL All-Star Game held in the arena. In the Amateur Hockey Stadium serves as the venue for the Herder Memorial Trophy, which is awarded annually to the best amateur team in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

During the 2010/11 season, the Arena was used as a venue for the 4 Nations Cup and the Telus Cup.

Other sporting events

In 2005, was the Mile One Centre hosted the Tournament of Hearts, the Canadian Curling Women's Championship.

The National Basketball Association staged before the 2003/ 04 NBA season a preseason game between the Toronto Raptors and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the arena. Shortly before the beginning of the game, however, complained the coaches of the two teams on the wet floor and the unusually high temperature. This had brought a part of the ice to evaporate so that the basketball court was unplayable due to condensation. The game was subsequently canceled.

Juno Awards

The Juno Awards, a Canadian Music Awards were awarded in April 2002 and 2010 in the arena.
