2001–02 AHL season
The 2001/02 season was the 66th regular season of the American Hockey League ( AHL ). The 27 teams completed in the regular season of 80 matches. The AHL played the penultimate time with 6 divisions. Best team in the regular season were the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, while the Chicago Wolves won in the playoffs their first Calder Cup. Compared to the previous season the number of teams increased to seven, which was mainly due to the dissolution of the International Hockey League and the acquisition of certain IHL franchises.

Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The Louisville Panthers were inactive.
- The Kentucky Thoroughblades been to Cleveland, Ohio, moved and played from now on as Cleveland Barons.
- In the course of league expansion, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers were taken.
- In the course of league expansion, the Manchester Monarchs were taken.
From the International Hockey League the following six teams were included in the AHL:
- The Chicago Wolves Chicago, Illinois.
- The Grand Rapids Griffins from Grand Rapids, Michigan.
- The Houston Aeros in Houston, Texas.
- The Manitoba Moose from Winnipeg, Manitoba.
- The Milwaukee Admirals from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
- The Utah Grizzlies from Salt Lake City, Utah.
