Steve Maltais

Steve Maltais ( born January 25, 1969 in Arvida, Quebec ) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player who during his playing career, including for the Washington Capitals, Minnesota North Stars, Tampa Bay Lightning, Detroit Red Wings and Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League was active. His most successful period, he experienced in the Chicago Wolves, with whom he won the Turner Cup and Calder Cup once to twice. The second player in the franchise history of the Wolves player's shirt number was officially closed on 15 April 2006 by the team and has since awarded more no players.

Career

Steve Maltais began his career at the Wexford Raiders in the MTHL, for which he was active from 1985 to 1986. He then joined the Cornwall Royals in the Ontario Hockey League and went for their team the next three years on the ice. During this time the attacker was selected at the NHL Entry Draft in 1987 in the third round to 57th overall position of the Washington Capitals. In the 1989/90 season Maltais debuted for the Capitals in the National Hockey League and remained no points in nine starts. However, the majority of the season he spent with the Baltimore Skipjacks of the American Hockey League, where he was once one of the best players in point. In the following season, he managed to increase his points haul and achieve 84 points scorer for the Skipjacks in a total of 79 games. On June 21, 1991 Maltais was transferred to the Minnesota North Stars of the Washington Capitals in a swap deal with Trent Klatt, in exchange for Shawn Chambers went to Washington. After twelve games for the North Stars, he was sent to the Kalamazoo Wings in the International Hockey League, where he scored 56 points in 48 games. In the same season the offensive player also stood for the Halifax Citadel in the American Hockey League action.

On March 8, 1992, a renewed player exchange, was given to the Quebec Nordiques in consequence of Canadians in exchange for Kip Miller. Without having attended a game for the Nordiques selected him the Tampa Bay Lightning on June 18, the 1992 NHL Expansion Draft from. In the premiere season of the franchise Maltais played 63 NHL games for the Lightning, and posted here is 20 points. After only one year gave him these in exchange for Dennis Vial to the Detroit Red Wings. In the following three years he excelled in each case the 100 -point mark and won in the 1997/98 season with the Chicago Wolves Turner Cup for the first time.

Two years later this success was repeated and Maltais won the Leo P. Lamoureux Memorial Trophy as the best scorer of the regular season. He also received the Ironman Award handed and was elected after 1995 and 1999 for the third time in the IHL First All -Star Team. On 6 October 2000, the attacker has signed a contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets and went in the course of the season in 26 games for the team on the ice, in which he scored three points. That same season he was sent again to the Chicago Wolves, where he had once again a leading position in the team. In the 2001 /02 season he won with the team for the first time the Calder Cup. However, the attacker was one of the most prolific players to continue the league and was awarded by the 2002/ 03 season with the John B. Sollenberger Trophy as the top scoring player of the regular season. In the season 2004/05 he managed with the Wolves again the way into the finals of the Calder Cup, but lost the series in four games against the Philadelphia Phantoms. Following that season, he ended his active career.

With 839 inserts, 454 goals, 496 assists, 950 points and 1061 penalty minutes Scorer Maltais holds all relevant franchise records of the Chicago Wolves. His jersey number 11 was officially closed on 15 April 2006 by the Wolves and has since been awarded more no players.
