1979–80 AHL season
The 1979/80 season was the 44th regular season of the American Hockey League ( AHL ). During the regular season, the ten teams played each 80 encounters. The eight best teams in the AHL then played in a play-off round to the Calder Cup.

Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The Adirondack Red Wings were added as an expansion team in the league
- The Philadelphia Firebirds were to Syracuse, New York, relocated and played from then on under the name of Syracuse Firebirds

Calder Cup Playoffs
Mode
For the play-offs, the eight best teams in the AHL qualified. In the first two play-off rounds, the winner of each division were played. In round three, the two division winners to the finals. The first two play-off rounds and the finals were played in best- of-seven mode.
