Miyako (Iwate)

Miyako (Japanese宫 古 市, -shi ) is a city in the east of the Iwate Prefecture in Japan.

Geography

Miyako is located east of Morioka and north of Kamaishi on the Pacific Ocean. The city is located at the northern end of the Riasküstengebietes the Sanriku coast.

History

By joining forces on 6 June 2005 with the small town of taro (田 老 町, -chō ) and the village Niisato (新 里 村, -mura ) of the district Shimohei Miyako has 61,000 inhabitants 697 km ² ( 2005).

Miyako was taken on 11 March 2011 after the Tōhoku earthquake, a 7.3 -meter-high tsunami. Around 4,500 houses were completely or partially destroyed. Until May 20, 412 dead and 355 missing persons were counted.

Economy

Miyako is the fishing port since the Edo period. Are mainly caught salmon and Pacific saury ( cololabis saira ). In the city's various enterprises for wood and food processing, as well as for electrical equipment manufacturing are located.

Twinning

Twin cities of Miyako are domestically Kuroishi, Hachimantai, the municipality in the district of Miyako taramas, as well as abroad, the Chinese city of Yantai (烟台 市) and La Trinidad in the Philippines.
