Yamada (Iwate)

Yamada (Japanese山田 町, machi ) is a town in the district Shimohei in Iwate Prefecture on Honshu, the main island of Japan.

Geography

Yamada is located on the Pacific coast of Sanriku Riasküste along the Yamada Bay (山 田湾, Yamada -wan ) and the north bank of the Funakoshi Bay (船 越 湾, Funakoshi -wan ), both separated by the Funakoshi Peninsula (船 越 半岛 Funakoshi - Hanto ). In the Yamada - bay there are several smaller islands, the largest Ōshima (大 岛, " Big Island" ) or Oranda -jima (オランダ 島, " Holland Island " ) is called. That is, as the other islands, uninhabited, but in summer is a popular seaside resort and there is also a ferry service. It is also home Kojima (小岛, " small island ").

The territory consists mainly of mountains, where the Takadakimori (高 滝 森) is the highest peak of 1160.3 meters above sea level on the western border with the neighboring community of Otsuchi. The Jūnishin -zan (十二 神山) is located on the northern border to the appropriate neighboring Miyako with 731.4 m. The dominant peak on the peninsula is the Karogadake Funakoshi (霞露ヶ岳) with 504.2 m.

History

1643 the Dutch ship landed at Breskens from the expedition fleet of Gerritszoon Maarten de Vries on the island Ōshima. For this reason it is also called Oranda -jima " Holland Island ".

As town ( machi ) Yamada 1889 originated in the establishment of modern authorities by the Meiji government by the villages ( mura ) Yamada and Iioka were merged in the former county Higashihei. In 1955, Yamada and the villages Funakoshi, Orikasa, Osawa and Toyomane from the district, now merged with the circles Nakahei and Kitahei to Shimohei combined and the new Yamada formed.

The town of Yamada was hit on March 11, 2011 by a tsunami after the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake, whose damage is by Ria Coast, especially since the town center at the end of the long mountain -fringed Yamada Bay, and the nearby rising mountains were strengthened. The coastal area of the city was under water and fires broke out. Five of the seven central district of downtown at Yamada Bay were destroyed. Traffic
